Scott Knopfel Background

Knopfel was the Drury Hotel clerk who died tragically January 15, 2015. During his career in the service industry, Knopfel worked for Drury Hotels, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the St. Louis Zoo, Pasta House Company and Trans World Airlines.

Knopfel’s devotion to St. Louis, and in particular, South St. Louis, was strong. He achieved the Eagle Scout Award as a member of Troop 158 at the former Holy Innocents Parish near Kingshighway and Arsenal. For his Eagle Scout Project, Knopfel mapped a 20-mile hike through South City, featuring landmarks such as the Bevo Mill, Tower Grove Park and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. The St. Louis Area Council of Boy Scouts officially sanctioned the trail.

Knopfel graduated from Southwest High School where he participated in wrestling and track & field. He also played in the South St. Louis Corkball League, which was co-founded by his great-grandfather and included many of his extended family members. He was a longtime member of Hope United Church of Christ in St. Louis Hills.

Scott Allan Knopfel, the son of the late Ronald and Beverly Knopfel, was born October 4, 1964. He was shot to death while working in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, 2015. He is survived by his sister, Karen Ettling, and brother, Mike Knopfel, and sister-in-law Patty Knopfel, and three nieces Olivia, Isabella and Julia.

“To provide educational opportunities through a scholarship bearing his name, seemed a fitting way to remember Scott’s life,” said St. Louis restaurateur Bart Saracino, of Bartolino’s Osteria located inside the Drury.

A native St. Louisan, who lived and worked in The Hill and Clifton Heights neighborhoods, Knopfel’s life was punctuated by selfless dedication and service to others. He brought a smile and could provoke a laugh from the people he served, and left them happier after they met him.

“A scholarship fund will allow deserving students to pursue a dream is something Scott would have supported whole-heartedly,” said Mike Knopfel, Scott’s brother, who along with sister, Karen Ettling, are helping in the planning of the dine-out event. “It is consistent with the manner in which Scott lived his life. We can’t express our appreciation enough to Bart Saracino and the Missouri Restaurant Association.”
