The answer to higher labor costs? Productivity. »

Hourly earnings in the restaurant industry are up 3.9 percent this year, Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the research and knowledge group with the National Restaurant Association, said at the show on Saturday. By comparison, private-sector wages are up 2.2 percent. Industry wages rose 3.3 percent last year, and 3.2 percent in 2014.

Women are playing an integral role in the growth and diversity of the restaurant industry, said Dawn Sweeney, president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association. Sweeney, who earlier this month received the Women’s Foodservice Forum’s 2016 Trailblazer Award for her support of gender diversity, indicated the impact females have had on the industry during Women’s History Month. She noted she is especially proud of the leadership roles women play in all facets of the restaurant business.
